In an effort to solve the teacher shortage in Fiji, the Ministry of Education has indicated that retired teachers may have a chance to teach again in schools around the country.

Education Minister Rosy Akbar says they are keeping their options open on avenues which they can use to solve the issue.

Akbar says recruiting the retired teachers will be their last resort.

“Well if I have no choice I will have to consider them because we want teachers to be teaching our children, we don’t want children to be left without teachers for long, so that is one option that will be considering but let us exhaust all these avenues first.”

Akbar says the teacher shortage is evident in both Secondary and Primary schools.

The Minister says in secondary schools, they lack teachers in Science, Maths, Physics, Computer, and Industrial Arts.

The Ministry has in the meantime put out an Expression of Interest to teachers who are unemployed and new graduates.
