Minute of silence for mum and daughter

May 10, 2014 1:04 am

Bus operators this morning observed a minute of silence to remember the lives of the mother and daughter, who died in a fatal accident at the Suva Bus Station on Tuesday.

They are attending the Annual General Meeting of the Fiji Bus Operators Association at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami.

Speaking at the opening of the AGM, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says at the moment, bus operators do not have a good image in the eyes of the public – following the fatal accident.

Sayed-Khaiyum says, the image does not augur well for the organization.

The bus operators I believe have a duty to ensure that your employee do the right thing. Of course there are probably more accidents caused by mini-bus drivers and larger omnibuses and there is probably more reckless driving by them too, there is now doubt about that. You can see it yourself when you drive down the highway. But please, ensure that your employees to do the right thing do not let your check drive without PSV. He can do it in the garage or the backyard, but not in a public place.

Sayed-Khaiyum adds, while the Suva Bus Station needs an upgrade, the onus is on bus operators to do their part for the safety of the traveling public.
