The Fisheries Ministry says it will propose a new legislation to protect under-size fish that are caught in our waters.

This will be done in an effort to protect the resources of our ocean for the future generation.

Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau says they’re working together with the New Zealand government to create the set size or confirmed size of different marine species that can be caught.

“This is basically what the exercise being conducted now and we are thankful for the government of New Zealand. We have two of their officers working with us at the moment to create this and also have the regulations in place so that it can enacted in parliament and become law. “

This was a topic of discussion at a workshop currently underway in Suva which involved officers discussing ways on how to achieve this.

The Ministry also highlighted that many marine species are depleted due to over-fishing.
