Ministry to compensate farmers

The Agriculture Ministry will compensate farmers if they lose their livestock due to Brucellosis and TB.

The Ministry will pay four dollars a kg to farmers who will kill their infected livestock in an effort to eradicate the diseases.

Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy, they are currently conducting inspections which have been challenging with some farmers unwilling to have their livestock tested.

“Farmer’s unwillingness to get their animals tested, they have to understand that is now a law. By law, we can go and test the animals. So gradually they have to understand that by law they have to allow animals to be tested.”

Dr Reddy says this is the only way they can eradicate the killer diseases.

He adds the Ministry is doing its part and has urged farmers to co-operate.
