Ministry says seek help

July 25, 2016 12:57 am

Women Minister Rosy Akbar says there are ways and platforms available to deal with unwanted pregnancies.

Akbar’s comment follows two separate cases whereby bodies of new born babies were found abandoned.

A few weeks ago a baby was found dead inside a bus parked in a garage in Wainibokasi, Nausori while another baby was found dead in a dumpster in Savusavu last week.

Akbar says the Ministry is appalled by the inhumane act.

She says the Ministry administers residential care homes for children, where abandoned babies are looked after by the Department of Social Welfare.

She says people can also seek free counselling services through the National Child Helpline “1325” and referrals are also made in such cases to the Department of Social Welfare for further assistance.

The Ministry is calling on people to do the right thing, to contact the authorities if in need of help.

Police are investigating both cases.
