An Afternoon Tea to commemorate International Women’s Day with the theme ‘Make it Happen’ was held yesterday to recognise the achievements of women and discuss ways of empowering women.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar acknowledged two senior members of the society – 98 year old Venina Ciriavese and Shanti Devi on their efforts in the development of the families, communities and nation alike.

“Today is an opportunity to celebrate women’s contribution to our families, communities, board rooms, work places, security forces, peace missions and at the national level.”

Akbar highlighted that celebrating women’s day will also question the violence, abuse and discrimination as a necessary burden that women bear.

“We need to put aside our personality clashes, personal grudges and differences and work in unity and solidarity for men to take us and our cause seriously.”

She added that commitment of strong committed male leaders to work in partnership with women is critical to achieve gender equality.

Speaker of Parliament Honorable Dr Jiko Luveni stressed the importance of men and women working together.
