Ministry outlines afforestation plans

The Ministry of Forestry aims to plant 4 million trees over the next four years and 500,000 mangrove plants in the coastal areas.

Minister, Osea Naiqamu while speaking at the Ministry’s review of the 2018-19 Annual Operation Plan and 2017-2030 strategic plan says this initiative will be their new national priority.

This is also aligned to the five and 20 year National Development Plan and United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Minister has also urged his officials to come up with ways that can support the energy sector with greener technology.

Naiqamu says it’s important to protect our environment through improved harvesting techniques and rigorous enforcement and monitoring of the Harvesting Code.

The Ministry as part of medium to long term plans aims to enhance its capabilities especially in the areas of scientific and technical knowledge.
