Fiji is faced with a challenge to manage and properly dispose of various waste.

A study which was undertaken in 2012 revealed that Suva City alone generates 65 to 68 tons of waste per day.

Environment Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy says Fiji is yet to develop a complex waste management system to handle different types of waste.

”Due to laxity and absence of waste disposal frameworks in the past and inability and lack of will to enforce penalties, there is a culture of disposing of waste in waterways, alongside roads, near river banks, along with the coast and in mangroves and natural forests.”

He says this culture needs to be changed as we risk losing our natural capital and deprive future generations of having access to it.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Waterways and Environment marked the global recycling day today with the theme recycling into the future.
