Drainage infrastructure in Fiji has deteriorated beyond its serviceable life over the years and the local government ministry is working to correct this.

The ministry today signed a Memorandum of Agreement on drainage maintenance for municipal councils in Suva today.

The Ministry’s Permanent secretary Joshua Wycliffe says this merge will help municipal councils utilize funds through the ’Maintenance of Drainage-Municipal Councils Programme’.

“This merger transaction between waterways and environment is meant to provide an active political, scientific policy based practical model intervention into your everyday flooding issues, so it’s a very important decision made and it is going to impact the lives of many Fijians.”

The government has allocated $3.8 million for this programme in the 2018/2019 budget.

This is an increase of 188 percent from the 2017/2018 budget where they had an allocation of around $1.3 million.
