Ministry of Environment and Waterways combined

The Ministry of Environment and Waterways have been combined.

A total of $14.2million has been allocated for environmental protection initiatives and $55.7million for waterways services.

Minister responsible, Dr. Mahendra Reddy says the new allocation can now help address the issue of drainage around the country.

Dr. Reddy says Fijians have always raised this particular issue with them and with climatic impacts getting more visible, they can now do more.

“Almost all of the villages are located near rivers or coastal areas. Given the climate change- they’re having a number issues in regards to drainage, we now have dedicated funding to undertake drainage work in villages and settlements, so very exciting times ahead.”

Meanwhile, in the environment allocation, $3.3million is for the construction of the Naboro Landfill Stage 2.

The Ministry of Waterways and Environment have been allocated a total budget of $69.9million.
