Ministry monitors diving equipment

May 17, 2018 7:19 pm

The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations is closely monitoring all diving equipment used by divers.

Minister Jone Usamate says this follows the increasing number of diving-related accidents caused by poor maintenance of equipment.

“Secondly is the problem of equipment factors, defective and poorly maintained diving equipment, so with the enforcement to the regulation, our inspectors now go out and inspect the equipment that is used by those that are undertaking diving.”

Usamate says the motivation of quick money has driven a number of unqualified drivers to take on the occupation and injured themselves in the process.

The ministry is working to raise awareness and conduct training to help address the issue.

Meanwhile, a diving regulation was enacted in 2006 to help reduce diving related accidents.
