Ministry in second phase of tackling child abuse cases

The Employment Ministry is currently in its second phase in working to tackle child abuse in the country.

Minister responsible, Jone Usamate says recording 200 cases of child labour, the ministry is working will relevant stake holders in getting these children back to school.

Usamate says Child abuse cases are still a concern as the ministry has established a special unit to look into the causes of the issue.

He adds the ministry has also engaged officers from other agencies to help address the issue.

“From 2011 till today, my ministry has trained teachers, police officers, sugarcane farmers. Fiji Sugar Corporation field officers, community leaders and child labour officers on child labour awareness and monitoring programmes.”

Usamate says they have also put in place a database to record all statistics related to child abuse to help the ministry in monitoring the data and to act accordingly.
