Minister urges for transparent approach

April 19, 2012 4:45 am

Anyone applying for social welfare assistance must provide correct information says the Minister for Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni.

Dr Luveni says the Government maintains a transparent approach to ensure that welfare assistance goes to those in the “poorest of the poor category.”

She says the findings of the World Bank Social Protection team revealed that 28 per cent of clients may not even fall in the category.

The Minister adds, the government has limited funds and it’s targeted towards improving the livelihood of poor people.

The report reveals that from the time of application and over the years, clients’ economic situation changes.

It says single mothers find employment and if their children have reached 18 years and are no longer in school, they no longer qualify for the assistance.

Following a recent review, it was determined that more than 3000 people no longer qualify for the assistance.
