Minister commissions grid extension project

Several grid extension projects are currently underway in Seaqaqa, Vanua Levu.

This will see hundreds of households in the rural areas get power supply.

Yesterday, the Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate commissioned Tadravula, Vunimanuca, Kawakawavesi, Vunivere and Navai Stage 1 grid extension project, which has a total government investment of $3.4 million and benefitting 600 Fijians.

Speaking at the Commissioning – Usamate says there are several other grid extension projects currently underway.

$2.1 million is being invested into the extension of the grid for State 1.

This will benefit an additional 82 households with around 400 Fijians.

Furthermore, the Solove Stage 1 grid extension project is taking place with a cost of $3.3 million with 106 households benefitting.

Another one is ongoing at Lagalaga Settlement with 264 households at a cost of $4.45 million.

Usamate says government is in the process of finalizing the award of contract on the house wiring for households.

Over the past five years, government has given funding of $224 million towards the energy sector, 70 per cent of this has gone directly to rural electrification.
