Minimum Wage topic of discussion during FTUC Conference

The Fiji Trade Unions Special Delegates conference in Nadi today

A number of issues were discussed during the Fiji Trade Unions Special Delegates conference in Nadi today.

National Minimum Wage, Right to Strike and Labour Reforms topped the one-day conference list.¤

Minimum Wage was one of the main topics discussed during this Special Delegates Conference with the FTUC National President Daniel Urai claiming their plea for an increase in minimum wage rate continues to be ignored.

“Brothers and sisters, the government has remained silent on our proposal on the National Minimum Wage, what Government has legislated is just $2.68 an hour or about $98.62 net per week for a 40 hour week”

However, the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation President Nezbit Hazelman says has called on those present at the meeting to consider other factors when asking for an increase in the Minimum Wage rate.

“You are all parents and if you employ house girls you work out the math whether you can afford to get somebody to stay home look after your kids and pay them $5 an hour. You may be earning $200 a week so we have to be mindful because you as workers are also employers.”


A number of issues were discussed during the Fiji Trade Unions Special Delegates conference in Nadi today.

The Vatukoula Strike, Federated Airlines Staff Association Issues and individual contracts were also discussed in the afternoon session which was closed to the media.
