The Consumer Council has started receiving complaints of minibus operators charging passengers with increased fares.

The Consumer Watchdog is calling on minibus operators to refrain from doing so as this is illegal.

Chief Executive Seema Shandil says minibus fares are regulated by the Land Transport Authority.

She adds only fares that are recommended by LTA should be paid by the passengers and accepted by the minibus drivers.

“As of now, we have received two complaints with the vehicle’s registration number. The council is calling on minibus operators to maintain their current fares and make sure that they are fair in their dealings with the consumers.”

Shandil says there has not been any announcement by LTA for the increase in fares, therefore, any increase is illegal and is punishable by law.

She adds minibuses provide a vital service to consumers and operators should not take advantage of this position to fraud consumers.
