Mineral Resource department to look at safety of mine workers

The Board of Inquiry is currently investigating the cause of the death of 37-year-old miner and will at the same time look at the safety measures for workers at the Vatukoula Gold Mine in Tavua.

Mineral Resources Permanent Secretary, Malakai Finau, says a number of concerns regarding worker’s safety were raised following the tragic accident.

“The Company is required to improve in such areas that will be identified by the Board of Inquiry and also to strengthen its safety with regards to underground mining environment.”

Finau confirms the accident occurred on the 18th floor, whereby the man allegedly fell into a sink hole last Wednesday.

Details of the investigation is expected to be released tomorrow.
