August 2, 2015
The tragic death of mill worker Kini Seniloli at the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba, is the first case under the new Workmen’s Compensation Act which was passed into law by Parliament in June.
Among the changes made is the increase of compensation claims from $24,000 to $50,000.
Employment Minister Jioji Konrote says Seniloli’s workplace death is being investigated and the family is expected to qualify for the maximum pay-out of $50 ,000
As the law requires, it will depend on the findings of the inspecting officers and under the existing laws now the family has got to be compensated because its obviously as I said you know a workplace fatality.
FBC News understands, Seniloli – while trying to fix a conveyor belt transporting bagasse, became entangled in it and died to injuries sustained in the accident.
