The Methodist Church of Fiji has taken a step to assist the government fight climate change by establishing a new Disaster Management Unit.
Acting General Secretary, Reverend Jeremaia Waqainabete says climate change is a world-wide issue and he believes the church should play a stewardship role.
Waqainabete says they are working with some government experts on how well they can deal with the issue collaboratively.
“We are bound to take action and that is one part of the church that we are dealing with at the moment, establishing that Disaster Management Unit where we have brought in professionals who have worked with government and are members of the church and we are formulating theological understandings for members to understand their stewardship role.”
Waqainabete says the set-up of the Unit will also be discussed in the Methodist Church Conference meeting which starts next Monday.
