It is vital to have the 2018 General Elections media workshop so that media organizations are fully empowered.
Media Industry Development Authority Chair, Ashwin Raj says that it is imperative that media is absolutely prepared for this year’s general elections.
Raj says media has a fundamental role in ensuring that Fiji does enjoy a free, fair and credible election.
“So it plays an important role in holding institutions to account in making sure that the public is dearly informed about their right to political choice, their right to political participation making sure that it’s not only the political elite but the people with no access to social mobility actually understand, that they have the right to political participation.”
Raj says that media should also keep a check on political temperatures to make sure that people don’t incite violence, incriminate and propagate hate speech.
The workshop has been organized by the Fijian Elections Office and MIDA which will end on Thursday.
