The media play an important role during natural disasters.

And as such – they must be given the necessary assistance to ensure people are informed and aware when natural disaster strike, says the Acting Suva
Special Administrator Bijay Chand.

Speaking at the media launch of the National Disaster Awareness Week, Chand says the media is the early warning system for natural disasters.

“All along you have been our frontline in the fight against disasters. The work you have been doing is both far and wider and covers almost everything one would like to know on the subject. You will know how seriously disaster affects our lives. The pain, the anguish they cause. The loss of loved ones, properties, sources of income and on worse occasions the loss of hope and the will to live.”

The theme for the event is – “Making Cities, Twons, Communities, Villages Resilient.”
