More than 100 foreign vessels that entered our waters last year was inspected by the Fiji Navy.

They were assisted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Customs officers.

Captain Tawake says they’re looking at increasing sea days from 180 days to more than 200 days.

“Having physical presence out there is a great deterrent to those who try and do illegal things on our waters. And also we have our maritime borders about five nations and every intervening through our borders are vessels of interest.”

Captain Tawake has revealed that during the inspection, there were no major issues, however, only minor ones such as reporting, the size of the net and other infringement matters.
