Marijuana most commonly used drug in the country: Finau

Empower Pacific which provides counseling services in the country has revealed that the most commonly used drugs in Fiji is marijuana.

As police continue to apprehend drug cultivators and peddlers, the organization says that a big number of young people are ending up in hospitals for using illicit drugs.

Counselor Mosese Finau who has been providing counseling for ten-years says the use of these illicit drugs is affecting people on a large scale and this is becoming a major concern.

“Methamphetamine, ice these are the ones that are coming in now on the street but the common one is marijuana because it is also being cultivated so this is an area where we have to acknowledge what the police is doing that they are cutting the supply for from the farmers end.”

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says they will continue to carry out their drug operations.

“We are well on top of our game and we don’t want it to get any worse and that’s the challenge for me and my officers that we go out and hit this so our children and our grandchildren are exposed to this.”

According to the statistics by Empower Pacific, they received 144 alcohol and drug-related cases since 2014.
