A 63-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years four months imprisonment for indecently assaulting and raping his granddaughter.

The Court heard the first incident of indecent assault and rape happened in August 2013 and the second incident of rape happened in December the same year.

The victim was only 13-years-old at that time.

The Court heard the victim’s father had passed away in 2000 and her mother remarried.

The man who is her paternal grandfather took care of her since.

High Court Judge Riyaz Hamza says she considered the man as her own father.

Judge Hamza says being her grandfather he should have protected her.

The man has a non-parole sentence of seven-years four months.
