A man pleaded not guilty to his charge of attempted murder at the Suva High Court yesterday via a video link from the Suva Remand Center.

Anil Chand is charged with a count each of attempted murder and act with intent to cause grievous harm.

It is alleged that on July 25th, Chand who was in a relationship with the complainant went to her flat in Vatuwaqa, Suva and confronted her as to why she wanted to leave him.

The court heard that Chand brought a knife along with him and stabbed the complainant several times on her back and abdomen.

It is alleged the complainant’s sister ran into the room after hearing her scream, where she was also allegedly stabbed by the accused.

However, in court yesterday, Chand claimed he was acting out of self-defense, as his then girlfriend attempted to slit his throat.

Refuting the claims, Prosecution read a state witness statement in which Chand admitted to inflicting wounds on himself.

Defence counsel requested for Chand to be released on bail as he promised to stay away from the complainant; imposing a 100 meter restraining order.

Judge Justice Daniel Goundar said he was reluctant to issue bail in case there was an issue of unfinished business resulting in the matter returning to court.

The matter will be re-called tomorrow for continuation of the bail hearing.
