November 7, 2018 11:39 pm

A man has had his sentence increased by one year nine months for raping and indecently assaulting his two daughters.

From January 2006 to February 22nd 2015, the man raped his biological daughters several times inside their home as well as in the bush.

One of the daughters was 6-year-old at the time of the offence and the other was 11-years-old.

The man was initially jailed for 16 years for rape and 4 years for indecent assault in July of 2015.

An appeal later saw the sentence reduced to 13 years for rape and 3 years for indecent assault.

This judgement was again contested in the Court of Appeal.

The court noted that after his wife found out about the rapes, he threatened to kill her and cut her up if she reported the matter.

On one occasion, the man told his youngest daughter to guard the door while raping the other one. On another occasion he tried to get one of the victims to take marijuana at the time of the rape.

Appeals Court Judge Justice Anthony Gates stated that rape is a serious issue which needs the co-operation of the courts to put an end to them.

The DPP’s published statistics produced in court revealed that from 2015 to September this year, there were 47 victims under the age of five years, 93 victims were under eight years, 247 victims were under the age of 13 and 478 victims under 18 years.

Justice Gates says the increase in rape crimes means the court must consider widening the tariff for rape against children.

The man has now been sentenced to 17 years nine months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 16 years.

The sentence for the indecent assault charge of four years has been upheld.
