Man charged for electoral offences released on bail

A man appeared in the Suva Magistrates this afternoon for allegedly making false declaration on an application to register as a voter.

Rajneel Pratap Sobha is charged with one count of false declaration on an application for voter registration, one count of false declaration on an application for replacement of electronic voter registration card and one count of applying to be registered as a voter on more than one occasion.

It’s alleged that on 18th July 2016 in Ba Sobha made false declarations on an application to register as a voter by filling in a form to state that his name was Rajneel Malhotra with a false date of birth before submitting it to the Fiji Elections Officials for his registration to vote as Rajneel Malhotra.

On the second occasion, it’s also alleged that on 10th June 2017 in Nadi he made a false declaration on an application for replacement of electronic voter registration card by filling in the said form to state that his name was Rajneel Malhotra with the false date of birth before submitting the same to Fiji Elections Officials in order to be issued with an upgraded voter card.

It’s alleged that on 31st October 2017 in Suva he applied to be registered as a voter under the name of Rajneel Pratap Sobha whilst having been registered as Rajneel Rajiv Malhotra.

He has been released on $3000 bail with $2000 surety.

A stop departure has been issued against him.

He has been ordered to surrender his travel documents and to report to Nasinu Police station on every Wednesday and Saturday.

He has also been ordered not to interfere with the witnesses.

The matter has been adjourned to 26th June.
