In a first for the Suicide Prevention Helpline, Lifeline Fiji was given a lifeline by Digicel.

A texting platform has been set up for donations of $1 to support the organization by texting to 176.

Digicel Fiji’s CEO Michael Greig says the partnership is a worthwhile initiative which required little thought to get behind.

Greig says suicide prevention is close to his heart and Lifeline Fiji with no core funding is reliant on community contributions.

He says the company considers the partnership as a means to not only help Lifeline Fiji but to assist Fijians struggling in their daily lives.

For Lifeline’s Officer in Charge, Jeremiah Merekula, the donations will allow them to continue to retain their volunteers who handle the crisis cline 24/7.

The texting platform will be available over the next six weeks with plans to increase that schedule.

Customers of Digicel can choose to donate by sending a text message with the word Lifeline Fiji to 176 to have a dollar donated towards the suicide prevention organization.

100 percent of the money donated will be issued to Lifeline Fiji for their operational costs.
