Life imprisonment for wife killer

A 22-year-old man convicted of killing his wife in Labasa has been handed a life sentence by the Labasa High court.

Tevita Vuniwai murdered his wife in March last year.

The court heard that the deceased had complained about domestic violence caused by Vuniwai and obtained a restraining order.

On 7th March last year Vuniwai picked the deceased from a bus stop and took her close to a warehouse in Naseakula in Labasa.

Vuniwai had a conversation with her for a while and when she wanted to leave to attend her classes, he took out a pocket knife and struck the deceased.

She was taken to the hospital where she later passed away.

The High court Judge Justice said that she was alone and not in a position to escape or seek help.

The Judge said she was the mother of his child and he breached the trust she had in him as a husband.

The High Court Judge also said that she had a right to move away and live her own life and Vuniwai was not in the position to control every aspect of her life.

Vuniwai has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years before being considered for any pardon.
