Legendary broadcaster passes away

Legendary broadcaster and chairperson of Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, Yaminiasi Gaunavou has passed away at the age of 65.

YG as he was well-known died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva this morning.

He had an illustrious career as a broadcaster which began in 1968 on the
i-taukei, Radio Fiji One station of the former Fiji Broadcasting Commission.

Veteran broadcaster, Masimeke Latianara paid tribute to his former colleague.

“I’ve known Y.G or Yaminiasi Gaunavou since he joined FBC from Queen Victoria School in the late1960’s. He came in as a junior producer/presenter for Fijian station and after sometime he joined the English section. When he died he was the chairman of the FBC Board of Directors.”

YG will also be remembered by many as a National Quiz Master.

His broadcasting career also took him too many Pacific Island Countries while he worked with the former South Pacific Commission and Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

YG returned to FBC as chairman of the board in 2008 and oversaw the transformation of the station where he began his broadcasting career.

His family is finalizing funeral arrangements.
