Leadership should be merit based: Bulitavu

October 5, 2015 12:58 am

Opposition Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu believes there should be a clear demarcation of roles for chiefs who enter politics.

Bulitavu has been responsible for on-going changes within the Social Democratic Liberal Party to make it more transparent and for the decision making process to be more inclusive.

Speaking on FBCTV’s 4 The Record last night, he said that chiefly entitlement doesn’t automatically guarantee someone political leverage.

“Questioning whether chief should be in politics or should be in leadership is an opinion. There is nothing is the policy of the party which says that chiefs are to be political leaders of the party and that we are to always have a chief as a leader. There’s nothing as such.”

The Opposition MP says selection as a party leader should be merit based and not through traditional connections.

Bulitavu says the principles and culture of democracy apply to political leaders as well.
