July 25, 2018 12:50 am

Good news for 24 market vendors in Lautoka who usually sell their produce along the Sukanaivalu Road, as a new market is currently being built for them.

Market vendor, Ragni Devi says for many years it was difficult for them as there were no proper facilities for them to use.

“We are happy because before we did not have any taps or a washroom but now we will be satisfied that we will have a washroom and a tap for everything and we would not be running to the service station to use this facility because we will have all the proper facility.”

Another market vendor Fioni Baleinaceva says for more than 10 years they have had to brave the hot sun and rain because they were selling their produce under makeshift stalls.

Baleinaceva says they had requested the Lautoka City Council to assist them in setting up proper stalls which the council agreed upon and decided to build a proper market.

She adds the majority of the vendors are women who rely no selling their produce to assist their families.

The new Sukanaivalu Market will open officially opened next month.
