Landslides affects the economy

December 21, 2016 12:10 am

The recent landslides experienced by many Fijians in the country during the tropical depression in the past few days could have a huge impact on the economy.

USP Lands expert Paula Raqeukai says many farmers who depend on agriculture for income will be the most affected.

“Usually it’s huge because it affects the economic activities in the country especially when agriculture root crops are affected. So landslides has its impact on the economy and a lot of the people who rely on these commercial activities for their livelihood. So those areas that are likely to be spotted as having landslides needs to be reported to the relevant authorities and people don’t live near these areas during natural disasters like prolonged rainfall.”

Raqeukai says it’s the simplest activities like tree planting and preserving trees that can help minimize landslides in times of disasters.
