Landlords urged to register with FCCC

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission is urging landlords to register with them.

Chief executive Joel Abraham says this will give FCCC the right to visit their property.

Abraham says this will also be beneficial as the Commission will be able to carry out surveys on how the revenue derived from the flat is utilized.

“Part of the registration requires FCCC officers going to visit the premises. Now landlords are not following, on one hand they do want us to provide advice to remove the rent freeze but on the other hand, they do not want to come forward and register.”

Abraham says some landlords are using maintenance as a reason to evict their tenants, victimize them or increase the rent.

He says registering will also provide them with sufficient data to look at what is happening in the market.
