Landlords under spotlight

July 3, 2018 7:15 pm

In recent inspections, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission noted that a property caretaker in Suva was given instructions by a landlord to put out flats on rent and only to seek tenants of a particular ethnic group.

FCCC Chief Executive, Joel Abraham says that such practice is illegal.

Abraham says that racial prejudices and discrimination has no place in Fiji.

He says that FCCC is against such practices that see to discriminate, based on racial lines.

Abraham adds that Fijians should not be discriminated and denied access to any goods or services including rental premises.

Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Director Ashwin Raj says that monitoring compliance is integral in ensuring that they remove vestiges of discrimination so that everyone regardless of race, enjoys the right to housing.

FCCC will work with FHRADC and other relevant stakeholders to ensure Fijians are offered goods and services in a fair and just manner.
