Land degradation a concern: Pillay

June 18, 2018 3:17 am

By turning land degradation into land restoration, we can restore its full potential says Assistant Agriculture Minister Viam Pillay.

Speaking at the World Day to Combat Desertification celebration in Labasa, Pillay says healthy and productive land can bring not only environmental but also significant economic gains.

Pillay says Fiji finds itself in a demanding situation where our total arable and productive fertile land is merely about 16 percent of total land mass.

Seventy percent of the topographical features vary from steep to very steep land.

Pillay says this only adds to the challenges that rural dwellers are confronted with in terms of agriculture production.

He urged the farmers to work together to transform the way we consume, produce, and work and live without compromising the current and future environmental security.
