Labasa hospital to offer laparoscopic surgery

June 25, 2018 4:53 am

Labasa Hospital is now able to offer laparoscopy or endoscopic surgery at a level that is equivalent to many regional hospitals in New Zealand.

Labasa Medical Superintendent Dr Jaoji Vulibeci says training received by the local doctors and nurses from the Friends of Fiji Health team from New Zealand has enabled them to conduct this specialist surgery in Vanua Levu.

He says the plan is to have Labasa be the base hospital for laparoscopic surgery in Fiji.

Laparoscopic Surgery is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions with the aid of a tiny camera.

The team started the training of nurses and doctors in Labasa in 2016 and since then they have been bringing in specialised equipment that are used in the operation.

Today, the team is again in Labasa for the third time to complete the training and award certificates.

The training is recognised by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Friends of Fiji Health is a registered charity made up of former Fiji doctors and nursed who are dedicated to providing gynaecological, surgical and medical services to Fijians.
