The Kiribati government will not relocate its people to Fiji.

This was made clear by Kiribati President Taneti Mamau recently to FBC News.

Mamau says the previous government’s intention was to relocate the people of Kiribati in case the climate change impacts on the island becomes worse.

However, Mamau says there were oppositions to this from the people and the decision was made not to relocate the people but to invest in the piece of land they have acquired in Vanua Levu.

He says they are looking at some investment options that’s available to them.

“Agriculture, real estate – who knows? Real estate is one of the most attractive investments in Fiji right now.”

Mamau adds, they have decided to stay on their island and fight against climate change and continue to call for global climate action.

The Kiribati government acquired almost 6,000 acres of land in Naviavia, Cakaudrove about an hour’s drive from Savusavu Town.
