Kingmakers challenge Tui Labasa installation

The Vanua of Qoibau – the traditional kingmakers of the Tui Labasa say they do not recognize Ratu Jone Qomate as the Tui Labasa.
They claim that proper protocols were not observed in the installation of Ratu Jone Qomate as the new Tui Labasa adding they were left in dark about appointment and the installation.
Speaking on behalf of kingmakers, Peni Taloga Raiqiso says in the past, the Vanua of Qoibau and the chiefly clan of Caumatalevu jointly installed the Tui Labasa.
But on this occasion- the Tui Macuata carried out the installation alone.
“We do not recognize Ratu Jone Qomate as Tui Labasa because Protocols were breached in the installation carried by the Tui Macuata. The installation of Ratu Jone Qomate was done without proper consultation of the chiefly household of Wasavulu Nagaceu and the Vanua of Qoibau.”
FBC News spoke to the Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere who referred all our questions to the Native Lands and Fisheries Commission (NLC) as they had approved for Ratu Jone to hold the title and given the go ahead for the installation.
NLC Chairman Ratu Sireli Vananalagi Vesikula says he will only comment on the claims once he receives an official letter from Raiqiso.
