Karavaki filed petition on police back-pay

August 24, 2015 12:52 am

Opposition MP Semesa Karavaki has filed a petition requesting Parliament to review and redress the police back pay paid out this year.

A job evaluation exercise in 2004 suggested a 30% pay increase be awarded to police officers and other members of the disciplined forces.

However, Karavaki claims the pay-out had many anomalies and created confusion.

“For example there are two officers of the same rank – they started at the same year one received $140 and the other received $7000 – that kind of anomaly Madam Speaker is unexplainable. Of the formula that is being used to be clarified – the accuracy of the information in their personal files because there are officers who are still alive and there is information in their files that they are already dead and it’s a big confusion madam speaker.”

The petition has been signed by 28 police officers.

The petition has been forwarded to the parliamentary committee of Justice, Law and Human Rights.
