Judge to sum up Holland street rape case this Wednesday

The trial of the man who brutally attacked and allegedly raped a tertiary student at Holland street, Suva in 2016 concluded with the last defense witness giving evidence at the Suva high court this morning.

Isoa Rainima in his 20’s is facing eleven counts of rape, assault with intent to commit rape, sexual assault, criminal intimidation and robbery.

His former partner, Inise Paoni who was the only defense witness told the court that Isoa was with her on 30th December, 2016 – the day of the alleged incident at broad daylight.

She said they were celebrating New Years Eve together with their family in Tamavua before visiting families at Nanuku in Vatuwaqa the day after.

However, upon reaching Nanuku they were informed that the Police were searching for Rainima.

She added that two days later, the Police managed to get hold of them and took them to Totogo police station for interrogation.

However, she said they were not told the reason for their apprehension.

The prosecution than questioned her if Rainima had a gold tooth to which she denied but agreed that he had tattoos on his right hand as described by the victim.

She also confirmed their relationship ended by the time Rainima was arrested.

High court judge Salesi Temo will sum up the case on Wednesday.
