IUU a global emerging issue for sustainable fishing

June 20, 2012 5:09 am

A system to trace the origin of fish caught must be implemented to help combat the global problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The issue was extensively discussed at the 2nd Coral Triangle Fishers Forum held at the Novotel Convention Centre since Monday.

World Wide Fund for Nature’s Tuna Strategy Leader Jose Ingles says implementing traceability systems will remove illegally caught fish from being sold to consumers.

“The traceability system will ensure that fish sold to the consumers are not stolen fish. The area that the fish are caught are known, what fishing system is used to catch the fish and that the stocks are legally fished.”

The traceability systems trace the origin of the fish, determine how it was caught and in the long term ensure the protection of fish stocks.

The Forum ends today.
