As investigations continue into the sinking of the MV Suilven in the Suva Harbour on Tuesday afternoon, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is calling on all vessels to keep clear of the area.

FBC News has posed questions about the sea worthiness of the MV Suilven to Permanent Secretary for Transport Commander Francis Kean.

Kean says the relevant paperwork for the ship was in order.

“The ship had departed from Ovalau on its way to Suva when this very unfortunate incident happened and I believe that the relevant coastal trading license was valid in order for her to clear Levuka port.”

Kean says the MV Rogovoka continues to be on standby to assist in the removal of any floating cargo.

The Fiji Police Force and Fiji Navy will continue to monitor the site for safety and security purposes.

34 people were rescued from the vessel before it went under.
