The investigation on the eight traders who were not complying with the law during Diwali period will be completed by next week.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission will then determine what will be done to the traders based on the investigation report.

FCCC Chief Executive, Joel Abraham says after issuing caution interview letters to the eight traders, they’ve found that the level of compliance by other traders have increased during the last hours of Diwali shopping.

“We will see whether there is sufficient evidence for FCCC to press charges. A total of eight traders under investigations and right up till the last moment we have done 287 inspections but the Diwali period, the last minute shopping rush. Our officers manage to do a 117 inspections and basically this ensure that the visibility was there. ”

Abraham says the presence of more than 20 FCCC officers during the last hours of Diwali shopping has forced traders to stay within the law.

He adds the FCCC will also closely monitor traders during Christmas and New Year to ensure that consumer rights are protected.
