Discussions are underway on how to get more people involved in trading on the stock exchange.

A two-day workshop in Suva is looking at devising a 10-year master plan for Capital Markets.

Organised by the Reserve Bank, the workshop includes stock broking firms, the South Pacific Stock Exchange and some publicly listed companies.

The idea is to boost investment and grow the economy by encouraging people – who wouldn’t otherwise part with their money – to see the benefits of buying stock or taking up bonds.

Permanent Secretary for Finance Filimoni Waqabaca, who opened the workshop, says these types of investments are ideal for people who have retired and don’t know how to grow their pension payouts.
