Inmates help farmers with cane cutting

August 11, 2015 5:33 pm

The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) is prepared to strengthen its work with sugar stakeholders by supplying more labour support for the cane-crushing season.

Following the success of the yellow ribbon program where inmates provide labour for FCS-owned agricultural farms, the FCS has replicated this program in the sugar sector by providing supervised labour to sugarcane farms across the country.

FCS Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu says while 200 inmates are currently deployed to sugarcane farms, the FCS is prepared to increase this number should sugar authorities request for an increase.
