Industry optimistic of good sugar production

September 13, 2012 1:16 am

The sugar industry is confident of producing a good amount of sugar after this crushing season.

Director for Sugar Viliame Gucake says following the floods early this year – they estimated sugar production at 181,000 tonnes.

This has been further revised downwards to 160,000 tonnes of sugar for the 1.8million tones of cane to be crushed.

Gucake says as of 3rd September – 78,077 tonnes of sugar has been produced.

After ten weeks of crushing, it looks promising in the sense that even though the cane production has gone down, the sugar has gone up – in the sense that there’s a lot of sugar in our cane.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation has sent 32,000 tonnes of sugar in its first shipment to our sugar buyers Tate and Lyle of London.
