India commits to further assistance for Fijian elections

The Indian Government has given close to four hundred thousand dollars in assistance to Fiji to for the 2018 elections.

India’s High Commissioner to Fiji – Vishvas Sapkal says as the world’s biggest democracy, the Indian government continues to strengthen the bilateral partnership with elections assistance a priority area.

“The assistance was provided in 2014 also and we are committed to provide any further possible assistance required from the Fijian Elections Office. The best thing is the Fijian Elections Office, they have signed an MOU with the Elections Commission of India in January 2017, so under that we are providing various assistances.”

Meanwhile the Indian High Commissioner earlier today handed over 224 thousand dollars to the Fijian Elections office to purchase four new vehicles.

Supervisor of Elections – Mohammed Saneem says given that the elections is one of the biggest logistical exercises during peacetime, ownership of its own vehicles will allow them better control to cart equipment and the necessary papers to and from polling venues and where they need to during the election.
