One thousand six hundred and seventy- two new cases of cancer was recorded by the Oncology Unit at the CWM hospital in Suva last year.

Oncologist, Dr Annie Atalifo says out of these cases, approximately 41 percent were young women living with breast cancer.

She revealed the figures during Fiji’s biggest morning tea in today, an initiative launched 11 years ago to raise funds to fight against cancer.

Dr Atalifo says in an effort to curb increasing number of cancer cases, early detection is vital.

“The most important thing is preventative and early screening because it is at that stage that we can talk curative instead of treatment.”

Meanwhile last year, the Fiji Cancer Society raised $61,000 through seventy corporate companies.

Through these funds the Fiji Cancer Society assists patients suffering from cancer and assists with their medication and transportation.
