Increased attention needed towards climate change adaption

December 29, 2016 6:00 pm

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has demanded for increased international attention and assistance towards climate adaption.

As president for the Conference of Parties 23, Bainimarama has urged the global community to stop being irresponsible.

“So that we can protect ourselves from the climate-related events already upon us. That requires greater access to climate finance, so that projects such as this seawall can be constructed wherever they are needed and families and communities can relocate to higher ground. And so that all of us are prepared for the cyclones yet to arrive at our shores.”

Bainimarama yesterday commissioned a seawall and a concrete walkway in Kumi Village, Tailevu.

The seawall which cost $400, 000 will help protect the community from the effects of Climate Change.

Over 50 villages and communities around Fiji need to be relocated to higher ground due to rising sea levels.
